Year 1 Surgical Week

Our Year One students sure know how to beat the January blues! They have been ringing in the new year with the busiest week on the MSc Dental Implantology course – implant placement week!

Before they start the course, each of our students are allocated a patient that they see from initial consultation right to the delivery of their final implant borne restoration. On the University of Bristol implant course, we select patients for our students as we feel it allows them to focus on the two most important things: patient care and their learning.

Have a look at the ‘before’ and ‘after’ radiographs of one of our Year Ones – what incredible work!

They have been supervised on a one-to-one basis by their tutors Steph Dickinson and Rhys Griffiths. They have also been working with Fayaz Rashid who helped some of them design and produce the guided surgery stents.

We are so grateful to the talented supervisors on our course and a big thank you to our lovely patients – without you, this wouldn’t be possible!

DENTM9014 Unit 8 Implant Surgery 2

As the air turns chillier and St Nick starts dusting off his sleigh, our Year 2 Dental Implantology students round off the calendar year with their Unit 8 Implant Surgery 2 study days. We are so lucky to have some incredible new speakers on the course this year, Estela Baz and Marco Orlandi (both from the Eastman Dental Hospital), plus familiar faces, Chong Lim, from our own DENTM9013 Unit 7 Treatment Planning 2 and of course our very own Programme Director, Jonathon Schofield.

Estela, Marco and Chong joined forces to lead our students through peri-implantitis, applied anatomy of soft tissue and micro-surgical principles with lots of hands on practical that our students love! Having such talented speakers on the Dental Implantology MSc is something we don’t take for granted, especially when they travel so far to share their knowledge and expertise with our students.

If you are interested in learning more about the course/our speakers, please do get in touch with Grace Radford (our Programme Administrator) on dentimplant-office@bristol.ac.uk.

BACD Annual Conference

On the MSc Dental Implantology course we are so fortunate to have some incredible teaching staff who are lifelong learners.

Two of our BDS alumni (now clinical supervisor and unit lead), Libby Boone and Lizzie King, plus Programme Director, Jonathon Schofield, were invited to the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s 18th annual conference: On the Shoulders of Giants.

As we all know, cosmetic dentistry is a growing sector (predicted to grow an annual average of 5%) and is only going to become more popular, so our teaching staff couldn’t help but learn more! Their favourite moments from the conference were meeting other BACD members and speakers and getting to see the key-note speaker, Frank Spear, one of the leading educators in esthetic and restorative dentistry in today’s world.

Attending conferences like this is such a privilege for our staff and we cannot thank the BACD team enough for organising such an excellent event.

CBCT study day 2022 – last day of 21-22!

Thursday 21st July 2022 marked the last session of the 21-22 academic year for our students. After the past two years of uncertainty, suspended programmes and quick changes, we have thoroughly enjoyed having a full academic year back in uni and on clinics with our lovely students!

The last day of term for Year One is our CBCT study day with Specialist in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology, Bhagyalakshmi Batchu. Bhagy is a UK registered specialist and works as a Consultant and Clinical Lead at King’s College Hospital. CBCT is a passion of hers, but her special interests extend to ultrasound scans of salivary glands and neck and ultrasound guided biopsies.

The students got to enjoy a day of lectures and bring their own cases for Bhagy to asses and share her expertise. Thank you Bhagy for all your support and for giving our students the perfect send off into summer.

Our September 2022 cohort is now full and we can’t wait for the new academic to begin – have a lovely summer and see you all soon!

Graduation 2022

After years of delays, lockdowns and dissertations, our graduating students from 2020/21 have finally been able to have the graduation ceremony they deserve!

Graduates attended the ceremony on Tuesday 12th July 2022 (during a week long heatwave, I don’t envy their gowns!), and we are so proud of them for all of their achievements.

The MSc Dental Implantology’s Programme Director, Jonathon Schofield, was able to attend and wave our graduates on and present them with their very own surgical caps with the University of Bristol logo on the front for them to remember us by!

Good luck graduates, we can’t wait to hear from you in the future!

Unit 9 – Prosthodontics 2

Last week, our Year 2 students had an invaluable two days with Neel Patel and Akit Patel, both Specialist Prosthodontists, looking at more advanced aspects of fixed and removable implant restorations.

Theoretical learning interspersed exquisitely photographed case studies and videos which provided our Year 2s with the best footing for the hands-on sessions that followed on day two.

The hands-on sessions included a transfer of the soft tissue profile from a provisional to the definitive restoration and how to use, impression and pick up attachments used in implant retained overdentures.

We are so grateful to have such talented external speakers lecturing on the MSc Dental Implantology course at the University of Bristol and we couldn’t thank them enough for all the work they do.

Implant Surgery Week

New year, new implants – Implant Surgery Week

For most, January means cold nights and boxing up Christmas decorations, for us on the MSc Dental Implantology, it means Implant Surgery Week!

For our Year 1s and 2s, it’s a whole week dedicated to the surgical placement of their implants.

These weeks are crucial for our students as it’s when they get to complete the implant surgery they have spent the first half of the year prepping for. Our students get to assist and observe each others surgeries too, maximising the opportunity for learning as much as possible.

Even though that can be a lot of pressure, our students wow us with their dedication and focus, and most importantly care for the patients they treat.

We wouldn’t be able to do any of this without the support of the incredible staff at The Dental Implant Clinic, the privately owned clinic in Bath that the MSc runs out of. We are so grateful for all the work you do!

Implant Surgery 2

Christmas is swiftly approaching and with it comes our fantastic Implant Surgery 2 unit.

Unit information

The unit focuses on bone biology and bone protective therapy, surgical manipulation of soft tissue and periodontal and peri implant health, conditions and diseases with a mix of theoretical and hands on practical sessions split over two days.

Who is involved?

Our students got the chance to work with industry leaders Nicholas Claydon and Nicola West who provided close supervision within the high spec facilities at the School of Anatomy labs. The students got stuck into the practical work, as you can see, and put their theoretical learning into practice!

BJOMS publication

I’m sure we can all agree that this year we need good news stories more than ever. Please join us in celebrating the incredible news that one of our own alumni, Bizhan Shokouhi (graduating class 2019) has had his dissertation ‘Radiotherapy and the survival of dental implants: a systematic review’ (Bizhan Shokouhi, Tanya Cerajewska) published in the BJOMS.

The BJOMS have provided a free link for you to read the article (for a limited time only) or alternatively, you can read at your leisure if you have a BJOMS login.

This is a fantastic achievement and the team on the MSc Dental Implantology couldn’t be prouder.

Well done, Bizhan!
